BREAKING: Philippa Tomson to leave ITV Tyne Tees & Border

Philippa recently won an RTS award in recognition of her work.

ITV Tyne Tees & Border weather presenter and Environment Correspondent Philippa Tomson has announced via Twitter that she will leave after 10 years at ITV after regional press speculation that she was about to depart.

Philippa said on Twitter "Yes, it's true. I'm leaving ITV after 10 years. Don't know where the time has gone but new challenges beckon, Winning an RTS award means I'm leaving on a high!"

Current Buns will cover Philippa's final day and will let you know when that is.

UPDATE: Philippa has updated her Twitter page to announce that she's leaving in April to join Sky News.

Today saw some changes to a couple of bulletins. The main one being 5 News's change of producer from Sky News to ITN with a new virtual reality set and weather graphics as shown by Sian Welby.

In addition, BBC Look North in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire saw Kay Crewdson, who is the replacement for Sarah Cruddas on Breakfast bulletins start today. Kay has been already providing weather bulletins for BBC Humberside and BBC Lincolnshire radio since December.

Laura May McMullan

Laura May is a BBC Midlands Today producer, video journalist and sports reporter. In addition, she is one of two reporters on the regional Football League show Late Kick-Off for BBC Midlands and East Midlands.

She is a passionate supporter of Stoke City and football in general.

We first featured Laura May on Current Buns during a package for BBC Midlands Today where she received a massage which received great reviews at the time.

Save our BBC Regional Weather Presenters

Wendy Hurrell may be axed as part of Delivering Quality First.

The first of what I think will be many save presenter groups has been set up. BBC London News weather presenter Wendy Hurrell along with the vast majority of weather presenters across BBC English Regions would leave or move to one of four regional hubs across the country to present forecasts across a multitude of regions as part of the Delivering Quality First programme where the BBC has to find savings in it's budget as part of the current TV license fee settlement.

The four hubs will be London, Nottingham, Plymouth and Leeds, with only the main forecaster/presenter left to cover the 1830 and 2225 weekday forecasts from the region. So in London's case, they'll keep Peter Cockroft, but lose Wendy Hurrell and Kate Kinsella unless they're offered jobs at the new hub. This may be impossible with BBC Weather Centre forecasters ready to step in their shoes.

A typical shift for a regional presenter can be 12 hours updating tv, local radio (more than one station except London) and online. Some presenters also double up as broadcast journalists for their news magazine and BBC One's Inside Out strand.

You may haven't noticed (which I've hoped for) that it's been a struggle to get the images on the website this week.

From Tuesday afternoon to Friday evening, I've been updating the website from my local library which only allows you an hour a day to access their computers after my PC gave up the ghost.

Today has been the first day of normal updating from home, so you may find some older caps from earlier in the week amongst the latest images.

Anyway, onwards and upwards...hopefully!

Laura Jones back on Current Buns!

Laura Jones has returned to regional news after at least 10 years reporting for
BBC Points West on Thursday.

Laura was last seen on regional bulletins reporting for BBC Wales Today, which led to a stint presenting and reporting for the CBBC bulletin Newsround. Later she moved back to adult news presenting sports bulletins on the BBC News Channel and co-presenting Your News.

Why don't some presenters get added to CB?

We're often asked why don't you add "reporter A but have plenty of weather forecaster B?" Quite simply, it's down to what the cappers submit to the image forum.

If you feel that a presenter isn't being featured enough or at all, post in the Request a Presenter section of the image forum. The cappers visit that site and if they decide they like what they see, they'll submit screen captures for the site. You can also post a message on the CB Facebook wall or Tweet us.

However, there are a small selection of journalists and weather presenters we currently don't feature. This is due to them being too mainstream and being featured elsewhere on the internet, or due to arrangements CB has with capture artists

over the use of their images.

Amanda Houston back from honeymoon

After a two week honeymoon break to Mexico, ITV Anglia weather presenter Amanda Houston returned to reality to present weather bulletins for the East of England on ITV1.

Looking tanned and refreshed, Amanda treated viewers to her first forecast of 2012, which despite being a cold one, warmed up the cockles of viewers!

Wendy Hurrell's 30 day December detox for Inside Out

Wendy was examined at King's College Hospital for the effects of alcohol on her body. Thanks to tgoat.

Being teetotal allowed Wendy to have more energy for even more genius tv moments, thanks to the sentinel.

Yesterday BBC One and BBC One HD aired an edition of the regional topical programme Inside Out which across England had themed reports based on the
effects of alcohol over the festive season.

In the London region (and nationwide on HD), Inside Out aired a 30 minute special featuring BBC London News weather and travel presenter Wendy Hurrell's attempt to be alcohol free for 30 days from the 1st-30th December, which included no booze on Christmas Day or in the lead-up to the big day.

As part of the detox, Wendy used this time to discover the causes that alcohol can bring during the festive season. She went out with the Metropolitan Police in Soho to witness how drunk people get and how it takes up resources in manpower as well as how the public behave after a few drinks.

Wendy also chatted to a recovering alcoholic and visited King's College Hospital in south London to see how alcohol could damage her body in the future.

The documentary also showed how Wendy could enjoy her recreational time without alcohol. She was still able to enjoy a night out with her hockey team and with friends at a wine bar, although felt uncomfortable ordering fizzy water at the bar.

Lighter moments included an Egyptian dance (hard to describe in words!), yoga moves, a handstand and light hearted banter in the wine bar with her friends.

While the documentary had some obvious moments, such as December being the time of the year where people tend to drink and a twenty something professional enjoying nights out with her friends, Wendy's package evenly aired the pros and cons of drinking and offered alternatives.

Roisin is from Guernsey and caught our attention when she worked on BBC Channel Islands News, mainly presenting the 8pm bulletin after EastEnders, from there she moved to England to work on South Today as a general reporter and bulletin reader.

to report from the Jersey Elections.

Happy New Year from Current Buns.

For the first post of 2012, we're having a look back at the 10 most popular image forum threads since we moved to our new home in October.

1. Keeley Donovan - BBC Look North (Yorkshire/East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire)

The shock leader of the pack, Keeley has slowly crept up to the top spot by just getting on with her many forecasts in the north of England and Saturday lunchtime news bulletin on the Leeds edition of the programme. Her appearances on Inside Out Yorkshire and Lincolnshire this year may have increased her profile.

2. Wendy Hurrell - BBC London News/Inside Out London.

Another successful year for BBC London's second weather presenter which has included more broadcast journalism for BBC London News and Inside Out. For the first time, Wendy co-presented Children in Need for the London area at Hyde Park.

Look out for Wendy's Inside Out report on January 9th at 7.30pm on BBC One London where she went without any alcohol for 30 days during December and looks at the effects of drink on others.

3. Nazaneen Ghaffar - Sky News & Channel 5 weather.

Formerly the most viewed presenter when we were on Proboards, Naz has continued to provide respectable views on the new image forum. Last year, she has continued to present weather on Sky News Sunrise with Eamonn Holmes and participated in Newsroom's Got Talent with the other Sunrise ladies. However from February, she'll no longer present Channel 5 weather at weekends or when Sian Welby is away due to the contract moving from Sky to ITN.

4. Amanda Houston - ITV Anglia Weather.

Admittedly under the Current Buns radar when on Proboards, her fanbase has been quick in viewing her thread, so we increased the sets we post and even Amanda is now aware of CB! Like her predecessors at Anglia, which include Sara Thornton, Becky Mantin and Wendy Hurrell, she is set for big things in the future.

5. Sarah Cruddas - BBC Look North (East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire/Yorkshire)

An amazing 5th place for the recently departed weather presenter who has now moved to MediaCityUK to work for CBBC and BBC Learning. Expect to see Sarah on CBBC shows as their Science expert and on Coast this year. Also where space exploration is involved, expect her to be reporting for 5 Live.

6. Lynsey Hooper - ITV Central Sport.

Lynsey has become the most viewed presenter of all the Central ladies in 2011 with her weekend (and now occasional weekday) sports reports on Central Tonight.

She also works for Sky Sports News online and is a

football reporter for BBC Sport's Final Score.

7. Sarah-Jane Mee - Sky Sports Football First/Sky News)

Sarah-Jane continues to present Football First on Sky Sports as well as Cricket AM in the summer. In addition, Sarah-Jane is a regular cover presenter on Sky News.

8. Kylie Pentelow - BBC East Midlands Today.

Our first BBC regional reporter to make the top 10 in 2011. Kylie is a general reporter as well as Anne Davies's stand in on the 6.30 edition of East Midlands Today.

Expect a lot more from Kylie in 2012.

9. Classic Current Buns - Nazaneen Ghaffar.

Another appearance for Naz as her Classic Current Buns thread makes the top 10. These are mainly her appearances on BBC South East Today, alongside some from ITV West and her first days at Sky News Sunrise.

10. Alexis Green - BBC South Today.

Sporty weather presenter Alexis Green just about makes it into our top 10. In addition to her regular weather bulletins, Alexis also occasionally covers sports events across the South and participates in marathons and triathlons.

Sian Welby's final OK!TV

18 months ago, Sian Welby was supplementing her television presenting work for online outlets by working in a Notts branch of New Look until Channel 5's owner Richard Desmond discovered her and then hired Sian to present weather forecasts, which led to a weekly slot on the soon to close showbiz show OK!TV.

Sian has been a big supporter of Current Buns since she joined Channel 5 and even made a subliminal reference in one of her forecasts where she exaggerated the word "currently" in her delivery!

Even though OK!TV is closing on Friday, Sian finished her stint on the show by dressing up as an Elf. Other appearances on Channel 5 include discussing the weather on 5 News and who knows, Celebrity Big Brother in January?

Kate Riley - BBC Look East

A new addition to Current Buns, Kate is a sports broadcast journalist as well
as a bulletin reader and general reporter for BBC Look East in Norwich.

Kate's main role is reporting from the football grounds across the region.

A random fact is Kate was born in California, yet I've yet to hear
"rad" or "totally awesome" in her pieces to camera!

Wendy Hurrell on BBC Breakfast

As Laura Tobin (covering for Carol Kirkwood) is a Met Office employee who are having industrial action, BBC contracted tri-media regional weather presenters are covering Met Office staff shifts on BBC News national programmes today, which led to Wendy Hurrell presenting bulletins on Breakfast. A nice surprise for viewers who normally see her on the programme with the combined travel
and weather bulletin in the London region.

Wendy has been busy over the last few weeks, co-presenting Children in Need in the London region as well as reporting for Inside Out (London) and BBC London News.

Hopefully BBC bosses will utilise Wendy's talents across national programming in the future as seen by the positive feedback seen on social networking sites today.

Ranvir Singh and a bright new future for BBC North West Tonight

BBC North West Tonight moved into their new studio (which will also become BBC Breakfast's new home from the spring) today, where Ranvir Singh
and Roger Johnson presented their first bulletin.

As we're Current Buns and not a TV presentation site, I'm not going to blog about all the boring technical side of the new studio set-up, however it does still provide
excellent views of Ranvir and weather presenter Dianne Oxberry.

However, they also have a secondary studio, complete with desk, which was in use during Breakfast and lunchtime bulletins, which is a bit of a let down.

Sarah presented her final shift yesterday morning on BBC Look North East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire in a rather nice outfit I suspect we won't be seeing on CBBC!

However, we still have three more days of Sarah in front of a weather map to look forward too as she'll be covering on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and Dec 27th.

I suspect a request for a Santa outfit would be too much to ask the BBC!

Happy 10th Birthday Current Buns!

November 17th marks Current Buns's 10th birthday.
Looking back at the first Yahoo Group 'newsletter' from later
in the month in 2001, we updated Lisa Burke, Jasmine Lowson and Chrissie Reidy.

The site wasn't originally set up to last 10 years, not even 10 days! I was mucking about with Geocities (our original host) by adding images that I found from various sources (I randomly added former QVC presenter Claudia Sylvester!) and found that adding broadcast journalists wasn't part of the celebrity sites of the time,
which concentrated on tv presenters or movie stars.

In those days, I didn't even know what thumbnails were, so would shrink full size pics down which would have been a pain to download on 56k modems,
for which I can only apologise for.

Despite this, CB became the original resource for finding images of news and weather presenters of the early noughties.

In 2002 I received our first endorsements from bemused journalists and weather presenters. Faye Barker was working at ITV Yorkshire at the time and was really flattered that there was a site adding pictures of her work. The next was ITV Anglia weather presenter Sara Thornton, who's now at the BBC working as a weather forecaster for the nations and regions. I built up an excellent resource of contacts who'd tip me to when they'd be on-air, which I'd pass on to the cappers of the time.

Scanman and Mick were among the first contributors of the site,
without the help of those guys, Current Buns wouldn't be around today.

You may remember the Hot Seat interviews, where around 10/15 presenters submitted answers to a selection of questions based around their job and more leisure pursuits. There are other sites such as TV Newsroom which continue the interview side going, but we pioneered the interview section for the masses!

Not to say we've had our problems, the negative press, mis-understandings from people who don't understand what the site's about, the closure of hosts in 2009 and more recently, yet we have come back stronger each time.

Clare Burton had a treat when she was joined by Pudsey Bear, the mascot of the BBC's Children in Need appeal on yesterday's BBC Channel Islands News.

Current Buns will be updated on Saturday with the best of the regional output from Friday's telethon (7.30pm BBC One). However, we will not be adding images from the quite frankly awful national newsreaders performance on the main show. Other sites, which you can find links to on the blog or the image forum will have plenty of Sian Williams and Emily Mailtis if you require them.

Steph McGovern

Steph came to our attention when she started presenting the business slots on BBC Breakfast in October. Since Samantha Washington defected to Sky News, she has been on the show more often, so we had to start a thread didn't we!

Before BBC Breakfast, Sam has been more known for her broad Middlesbrough accent on BBC Radio 5 live and on BBC Radio 2 when Chris Evans was still on drive-time presenting biz features. She still occasionally covers that slot with Simon Mayo.

Not to mention a one-off appearance on CBBC's Newsround where she was quoted as "My friend Steph" when introduced to explain the debt crisis in Greece!

A broad North East accent, cute looks and excellent presentation skills, alongside random comments where she managed to get in "Aye lads" during an interview about the re-branding of Newcastle United's St. James' Park ground will hopefully ensure Steph is on our screens when Breakfast moves to Salford in Spring 2012.

Becky Johnson on Sky News Sunrise

to discuss changes to how public sector workers strike.

However, she was only on for 3 mins just after 6am, we'd love to see our
former ITV Central honey covering for Charlotte Hawkins or Gillian Joseph instead,
or even Eamonn Holmes or Mark Longhurst!

After a weekend of having my ugly mug on the blog, you deserve a treat in the form of 5 News' newest recruit, Chloe Culpan who made her debut this weekend.

Chloe normally works for Sky News's radio department, reading news bulletins across the UK's commercial radio stations and also on London radio station Magic 105.4, which goes to show that you can have a face for television as well as radio!

I've been assured that Chloe will be returning to 5 News in December,
so we'll keep an eye out and update again.

Newsroom's Got Talent 2011

Wednesday saw the third annual Newsroom's Got Talent at the O2 in London's Greenwich where the cremé of the UK's broadcast journalists and other related staff from the major news channels and network bulletins let their hair down for one night only to raise money for charity, this year for Leonard Cheshire Disability
and Beating Bowel Cancer.

For the first time, the general public were allowed to attend,
so your intrepid webmaster took a break from watching news bulletins
and posting image caps to attend this event.

I got there a tad too early and reached the venue at 7pm, where I spotted the likes of Jane Witherspoon (Sky News), Lauren Taylor (Al Jazeera English), Keir Simmons (Daybreak) and finally one of CB's biggest supporters weather girl Nazaneen Ghaffar.

Naz surprisingly recognised me, despite my attempts of blending into the former Millennium Dome and said hello, talked about the website and how much she was looking forward to performing on the night. Oh alright, we also discussed Psychic Sally too. It can't all be about newsy stuff and how big the newswall at Sky is!

Sadly, Naz had to go back in and have dinner with her colleagues from Sky, not before posing for this picture for Current Buns (above). Also the television picture doesn't do her justice, she's so much prettier in person, this was despite being in make-up for her performance.

Anyway, after the randomness of chatting to Naz, I headed upstairs to await the performance. Spellbound came on and then there was a long interval between them and the start, because the celebs and hacks downstairs were still eating. To give the organisers credit, they gave us a free glass of champers which helped a lot.

Eventually after an hilarious behind the scenes video, charity auctions with hosts Brian Conley "It's a puppet!" and Carol Vorderman from Loose Women, the acts came on, first one was Upsot Creek (geddit?) which featured ITV News presenter Mark Austin on drums and an amazing looking blonde lady on co-vocals in the most amazing pair of red hot pants!

My mind is a blur for most of it, however London Tonight stole the show with an amazing satirical version of a number from the musical Chicago featuring Faye Barker, Lucrezia Millarini, Sally Williams, Charlene White, Hannah Emerson-Thomas (how the hell isn't she not on CB? *swoon*) and males Will Gowing
and Jamie Shephard.

Al Jazeera English, Channel 4 News (complete with the legend that is Jon Snow) and the Freelancers then did something or another, which was then followed by interesting performances from ITV News complete with the guest appearence of Katie Derham from BBC Proms, Daybreak featured 1001 people alongside Dan Lobb, Steve Hargrave and bulletin newsreader Tasmin Lucia Khan.

Finally Sky News came on with their house band and female vocalists Jacquie Beltrao, Sarah-Jane Mee, Charlotte Hawkins and of course Naz who belted out a Girls Aloud number with gusto.

London Tonight won the night, which was decided by judges Anton Du Beke, Christopher Biggins and Arlene Phillips.

Sadly I had to miss Right Said Fred and made a dash for the tube home and didn't get to say goodbye to Nazaneen, but a good night overall.

Sam Naz

Welcome to our new addition Sam Naz, who we've never featured on the site before. She's the presenter of BBC Three's 60 Seconds bulletins between such gems as Family Guy, American Dad and Snog, Marry, Avoid on Monday's to Thursday's normally around the top of each hour from 7pm to approximately midnight.

Sam came to the attention of one of our cappers when she covered the BBC One 3pm News Summary on Monday. She also covers news bulletins
on the BBC Red Button and online.

Sam has also worked for BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat
and as a researcher for CBBC's Newsround.

Mel Barham

Mel is no stranger to Current Buns. We featured her on our former spin-off website Radio Babes when she worked as a broadcast journalist for Birmingham radio station BRMB. The pics Mel submitted were of her dressing up for an Abba themed party. Sadly we no longer have those pictures after the site closed down!

After Radio Babes closed in 2009, we were lucky to be able to feature Mel
on Current Buns as she joined ITV Granada as a reporter/presenter
where one of her first packages were trying on shoes!

Sarah Cruddas' final shifts at BBC Look North

Sarah has announced via Twitter the last days of her presenting weather forecasts for BBC Look North in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire as she moves to her new job at Media City UK in Salford with CBBC/BBC Learning.

Her last full time shift will be on the morning of Thursday November 17th, however she'll return on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and December 27th to provide
Christmas cover for the regular forecasters.

Wendy Hurrell and her outfit barometer

As Wendy has been providing half-term cover for Peter Cockroft on BBC London News, we have noticed whatever Wendy wears for her forecasts this week,
they match the mood of the weather in London.

Monday - Brown outfit = Cloud and rain.
Tuesday and Wednesday - Grey outfits = cloud and showers
Thursday - Pink jacket and black skirt = rain.

There's still Friday to go, although I expect Wendy will get out another autumnal number to match the dismal weather we've had this week.

Faye Barker

A nice surprise to see Faye covering for Nina Hossain/Natasha Kaplinsky on London Tonight on Monday evening, which normally makes LT's 6pm bulletin a no go area for studio images as they're too mainstream for CB's criteria.

However, Faye's broadcasting career goes back even further than the website. She was first seen on the now defunct business channel EBN (which is now CNBC), then joined 5 News which was then produced by ITN. She then got our attention when she joined ITV Yorkshire as a reporter/presenter for their Calendar regional bulletin,
where she also presented local documentaries.
During her stint there, Faye became the first journalist to endorse Current Buns.

She also reported for the ITV network series Package Holiday Undercover, which saw Faye expose dodgy resorts across Europe and the Middle East.

After leaving ITV Yorkshire, Faye became a freelancer, working for Sky, ITV London and returning to 5 News (now produced by Sky) before eventually returning to ITN as the main bulletin reader for the Morning News as well as presenting regional bulletins in the London region on Daybreak and weekends.

Julia Botfield

It's been a very long time since we've featured the artist
formerly known as Jules Botfield on Current Buns.
In fact, we don't even have any of her old pictures in the archive.

The former BBC London News and Breakfast presenter is now based in Tunbridge Wells, presenting a daily mid-morning topical show on BBC Radio Kent and presents The Politics Show in the South East on Sundays.

Samantha Washington's last day on BBC Breakfast

BREAKING: Sarah Cruddas to leave Look North EY&L

Sarah has announced via Twitter that she is leaving BBC Look North EY&L for a role at Media City UK in Salford presenting on Science shows for the CBBC and CBeebies channels and also working with BBC Learning.

It's unconfirmed when Sarah will present her last shift on Look North,
however it's expected to be in mid-November.

In addition, Sarah will also be on BBC2 series Coast in the new year.

We've always had a soft spot for BBC Look North Yorkshire and Lincolnshire weather presenter Sarah Cruddas, who is as excited about science as she is about the weather as she also doubles up as a science reporter who recently covered the final NASA space shuttle launch and landing for BBC Radio 5 Live as well as reporting for Look North.

Rachael Hodges

Rachael has become a new favourite of Current Buns this year since she started on the BBC News Channel covering sports bulletins, then moving to cover overnights which are also simulcasted on BBC World News which has grabbed the attention of a global audience as well as more visitors to her galleries on the site.

However her voice is just as well known in the UK as she also is a news bulletin reader on BBC Radio 5 Live and also contributes to the Tony Livesey show by reading texts and emails, Monday to Thursday from 10.30pm-1am. This show is also streamed live on video via the 5 Live website on Tonyvision!

UPDATE: Rachael has announced via Twitter that she is leaving the Tony Livesey show in two weeks time to work the day news shift at Radio 5 Live instead.

Clare Burton & BBC Channel Islands News

BBC Channel Islands News reporter & presenter Clare Burton is becoming one of our favourites on CB. Along with her colleagues Beckie Williams, Anisha Shah, Gwyn Garfield-Bennett (was Gwyn Jones on ITN in the 90s), Amy Harris and Emma Thomas, this sub-opt bulletin of Spotlight is one of the gems of the BBC largely unknown to viewers on the UK mainland, except for Current Buns visitors of course!
